Production Engineer

Position Description:

The Overwatch Imaging Production Engineer will optimize designs and build electronics and precision optical systems.  This team member ensures products are built to our high standards and are working as intended to support delivery of advanced imaging payloads for airborne systems.  This employee will be focused on continuous improvement and quality assurance to support growing demands for our solutions.

Overwatch Imaging is changing the way airborne image-based intelligence is created. Rooted in the airborne intelligence and drone technology cluster of Hood River, Oregon, Overwatch Imaging is revolutionizing human understanding of the world through computer vision-optimized sensing. Overwatch Imaging makes customized imaging payloads designed for mission-critical, automated remote sensing roles. Our products allow tactical UAS and general aviation aircraft to automatically detect small targets, collect precision survey maps, conduct autonomous search, and provide real-time image-based intelligence to users. Overwatch Imaging payloads feature autonomously gimballed cameras combined with onboard image processing and AI software, which we leverage to reduce operator workload, accelerate data processing workflows, and identify hard-to-find small signals from large datasets.

Major Areas of Responsibility:

The ideal candidate will be strong in many of the following areas:

  • Design and Development: Lead improvement initiatives for manufacturability, quality assurance, material procurement, and maintenance in support of production targets and customer commitments.

  • Product Assembly and Subsystem Build and Test: Utilizing technical drawings or models, will create work instructions for the production team.  Using hands on knowledge to support the final build of products for delivery to customers.  Set up and operate production equipment to support good manufacturing practices.  

  • Identify Problems and Suggest Improvements: Identifies and debugs problems in processes, products, equipment and works for solutions.  Assists design engineers in developing, building, or testing prototypes and new products and recommends designs for manufacturability.

  • Production System Quality: Completes component, subassembly and imaging payload system verification testing; identifies and pursues reliability improvements and cost reduction opportunities; and ensures repeatable performance of delivered systems.

Experience and Education:

  • Education and hands-on experience in electronics, electrical engineering, computer engineering, mechatronics, robotics or related fields

  • Experience in aerospace and defense, particularly with mid-sized unmanned aircraft and/or airborne imaging systems is preferred

  • Experience with electro-optical remote sensing systems, digital image signal transmission, communications protocols, and rapid prototyping is preferred

  • No professional experience required with a Bachelor’s degree, or

  • 3 to 5 years of relevant experience with an Associate’s degree or professional training

  • IPC-A-610 or similar certification, and/or airborne systems maintenance experience is helpful

Technical Competence:

  • Highly organized with attention to detail

  • Ability to troubleshoot issues, analyze test results, and promptly communicate findings internally and with clients

  • Familiarity with Mechanical Engineering (cabling, structural, thermal, environmental testing), CAD experience preferred

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office tools (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.), data analysis (Matlab, etc.) and technical report writing

This position is based in Hood River, Oregon, and requires occasional business travel and work in and around light aircraft. All applicants must be authorized to work on a permanent basis in the United States.
