Airborne Energy Solutions expands intel capabilities with second Overwatch payload

Alberta-based flight services provider adopted advanced sensor technology ahead of historic 2024 wildfire season

Alberta-based Airborne Energy Solutions Inc. (AES), a leading provider of aerial services and wildfire management support across Western Canada and the Arctic, has bolstered its intelligence capabilities by securing two Overwatch Imaging TK-8 Smart Sensors. Earlier this year, AES partnered with Overwatch Imaging to introduce advanced sensor technology during the 2024 Canadian wildfire season.

As a result of successful operations conducted during Canada's second-largest fire season in two decades, AES has officially added two TK-8 sensors to its fleet, enhancing its ability to meet increasing demands for time-critical aerial intelligence.

Overwatch Imaging TK-8 Smart Sensor is an imaging workhorse with sensors in five spectral bands (RGB/Visible, NIR, SWIR, MWIR and LWIR) and power onboard processing

“We saw tremendous value in working with Overwatch and the capabilities the TK-8 system delivered during an extremely busy fire season,” said Ron Rudd, AES’s Commercial Operations Manager. “By investing in this additional sensor technology, we are further committed to providing rapid, high-value aerial intelligence services, which are essential for wildfire and disaster response in Western Canada."

AES deployed the TK-8 after successfully passing the Hinton IR Grid Test, a rigorous requirement for vendors seeking to provide infrared services within the province of Alberta. The test, also recognized by other provincial fire services, is designed to confirm a system and operator’s proficiency in three critical areas: Detection, Accuracy, and Efficiency.

The TK-8 has proven to be a game changer around the world for evaluating, monitoring, and mapping dynamically changing wildfires and other natural disasters. With Overwatch Imaging's Automated Sensor Operator (ASO) software for automated collection and AI-based image analysis, and sensors in five spectral bands, the TK-provides a wealth of real-time intelligence essential for accurate, time-critical decision-making.

“We are excited to support AES’s initiative to bring a new technology to Canadian wildfire management teams, and are pleased to see the value it brought, to AES as a service provider as well as the agencies, responders, and communities impacted by wildfires throughout the season,” said Greg Davis, Founder and CEO, Overwatch Imaging.

In addition to fixed-wing intelligence and mapping services, AES owns and operates a fleet of rotor craft and provides forestry support, wildfire suppression, wildlife services, oil & gas support, construction, environmental services, aerial photography and much more.
